What Do Vegans Put On Toast?

Written By Rachel Thomas.

I want to start off by admitting my strong love for toast.

I ADORE toast. Seriously, I could eat it all day, everyday.

Toast for breakfast. Toast for lunch. Toast for dinner. Toast in the middle of the night?!

Why the heck not!?

But less about my slight addiction, and more about what vegans put on their toast.

The options are endless! And there’s many to choose from whether you're a sweet or savoury person, too.

Some favourite toast toppings include:

Butter:

Yes, we’re starting pretty simple. But toast with butter is pretty delish.

It’s easy to find dairy-free butter at any store nowadays so that’s a good start.

You might want a super thin layer of butter or if you’re like me, then you’ll slap on the butter like it’s about to be out of date.

Peanut (or any nut) Butter:

Let’s be real, you can’t go wrong with nut butters on toast. Unless, of course, you don’t like nut butters.

BUT, peanut butter on toast is incredible. Smooth peanut butter, crunchy peanut butter, peanut butter with seeds or even chocolate peanut butter!

The options keep on going!

To make it a little bit extra, you can slice up some banana, or any type of fruit, and add a layer on top of the peanut butter toast.

Jam:

Now this is pretty classic for bread spreads.

And, there’s lots of different fruit flavours, too, so you can change it up once in a while.

Strawberry jam is probably the most popular, but if you think of a fruit, there will be a jam version.

If you really wanted to add that extra touch, you can make glitter jam! Yes - it’s a real thing.

Avocado:

A great choice for savoury toast and getting those healthy fats in.

You can mash it up and spread it on like butter or cut into slices and place onto the toast. Everyone likes it differently!

There’s always some extra things you can add on top of avocado though.

Some of my favourites are:

  • Sprinkling some nutritional yeast over the top.

  • Lemon and pepper - pretty classic.

  • Cooked spinach.

  • Chilli flakes.

  • Tomatoes and a little bit of balsamic vinegar/syrup over the top.

If you don’t know where to start with spicing things up a bit for your avocado, check out this avocado smash recipe.

All are delicious, but avocado on its own is just as good.

Maple Syrup (or Agave):

Substituting the toast-favourite of honey, vegans can use maple syrup or agave syrup to fill their sweet tooth.

Maple syrup is also good for making french toast - see below for french toast.

Scrambled Tofu:

Instead of going for a classic toast spread, you can opt for the vegan alternative of scrambled egg instead!

It’s super easy to make too.

A block of tofu and some seasonings and you’re ready to go!

Check out this recipe for making the BEST scrambled tofu.

You can even add mushrooms, peppers, or any other veggies, to make a more wholesome meal.

Hummus:

That’s right - hummus!

The garlicky creamy goodness.

The good thing about hummus is that it also comes in a variety of flavours. I’m a huge fan of a kumara (sweet potato) and squash hummus, but the class garlic hummus is still a big hit.

Just slather it over a slice of toast and away you go!

Layer on some tomatoes for a nice combination.

Beans:

Beans on toast?!

Whaaaaaaaaat?!

Yep, tinned baked beans tend to be vegan and if you’ve never tried beans on toast before - well, now is the time to try it!

Don’t forget about different ways to spruce it up, too.

I like to put some vegan cheese on top of my beans because it’s pretty darn delicious.

Nutritional yeast also adds a really nice touch to the beans.

If you’re not a fan of baked beans, you can make your own bean mix to add on top of your toast.

French Toast:

But isn’t french toast usually made with eggs?

WELL… with the rise of veganism in the past couple of years, there have been a lot of people trying out new ingredients and recipes to create vegan versions of our favourite meals.

So vegan french toast…

Here’s a quick breakdown:

You’ll need agave syrup or maple syrup, non-dairy milk, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and, obviously, some bread!

  1. Mix all the ingredients together, apart from the bread, and leave in the fridge for around 10-20 minutes.

  2. Heat some vegan butter into a frying pan or griddle.

  3. Dip each side of the bread slice into the batter for 20 seconds and then place in the heated frying pan or griddle.

  4. Carefully cook until golden brown each side. Probably around 3-4 minutes.

  5. And voilà!

Enjoy!
