Mean Black Bean Burgers

Here in New Zealand, “mean” means cool, wicked, awesome, totally rad.

Just incase you were wondering ;)

These meaaaan burgers are packed with protein, flavor, and love (cheesy, but true!).

They’re homemade burger patties that you’ll want to share with even your most meat-loving friends.

I swear, they’re shockingly tasty.

My boyfriend, Nick, was the one who created this recipe with some inspiration from Peas & Crayons.

He made each of these patties with true focus and perfection.

Now, you don’t need to be that detail-oriented, but that’s what I mean with them being packed with so much love.

He took care in making each one of them round, symmetrical, and evenly beaned.

I think he’s a keeper!

If you’re having a summer BBQ and you want to make sure the vegans are taken care of, this is your recipe.

It does take some preparation, but if you take the time to make these patties from scratch, I can guarantee you’ll impress the pants off of everyone at your BBQ.

These burgers are SO great for freezing and saving for a rainy day, too.

You can top them with vegan cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, a sesame seed bun, whatever!

Assemble as you like.

Because these burgers have quinoa, beans, and veg in them, they’re proteinified.

New word!

Proteinified (verb): To be packed with the most delicious protein ever.

Yes, here at Craving a Peace, we like to make up our own vegany words.

Vegany (adverb): When Kelsey takes it too far and tries to make the word “vegan” a real complicated concept.

You on board yet? 😅

Okay, let’s get to that recipe before I freak you out too much!

Mean Black Bean Burgers

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cook quinoa according to instructions on the packet.

  2. Finely chop veggies.

  3. Mash black beans in a bowl.

  4. Blend oats in a blender until it resembles a flour-like substance.

  5. Add quinoa, chopped veggies, and oat flour to black bean mash.

  6. Add flax egg (egg replacement) and mix with your hands.

  7. If mixture becomes too sticky, add a little water.

  8. Divide mixture into four portions, shape into flat burger patties, and put on a plate.

  9. Put burger plate into refrigerator to set while you prepare burger buns.

  10. Prepare toppings: slice tomatoes, vegan cheese, and lettuce.

  11. For pan cooking: Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a medium sized sauce pan until hot.

  12. For BBQ grill cooking: cook on the flat part of the BBQ to start, then move to the grill side (this helps keep it together).

  13. Cook black bean burger patties 5-7 minutes per side until cooked through.

  14. Assemble burger as desired.

  15. Toast burger buns if preferred.

  16. Enjoy!
